Statement of Purpose
The Marine Museum of
Manitoba (Selkirk) Inc. formally came into being in 1972 - 1973 in the City of Selkirk. Its aim at that time was, and still is, to gather ships, artifacts, and items relating to
marine life, to tell the story of the development and the operation of marine life on Lake
Winnipeg and the Red River. The period covered by the Museum's displays starts circa 1850
and continues to present day.
The Marine Museum is a non-profit
organization operated by a board of local citizens. The Selkirk Museum receives
support from the City of Selkirk and from other nearby businesses. The Marine
Museum also receives support from both the provincial and federal government.
The Marine Museum of Manitoba
(Selkirk) Inc. will collect, preserve, research, exhibit and interpret a
collection of historical artifacts. It will serve the inhabitants of Manitoba,
and more directly the Interlake area of Manitoba, by carrying out these
functions and by its emphasis on special activities at the Museum site. The programs of the Museum are also available to all local, non-profit
organizations, with the permission of the Board of Directors, to present
complementary activities and events.
